I love little gems like this! Your rendering is masterful. I greatly enjoy the skin texture and moistness of the eyeball and tear ducts. My only criticism is that the curve of the iris should be simpler/smoother curve.
You seem to understand the importance of not letting detail overpower a piece; I see quite a few drawings that have excellent detail, but no planer analysis or sense of balanced composition. You avoided tangents and even allocated the proper space needed for your signature.
You effectively conveyed a dark unsettling mood w/ your heavy line, and dominant grey skin tones. The enhanced skin texture adds grit. I personally think the enhanced shadow around the eye are fine. It amps up the somber mood, and shows off your ability to improvise from reference by using your sufficient knowledge of varying light intensities affect certain forms.
First things first, I love this. I have never critqued a drawing before, only photography, but this is so life like and realistic that I had to critque it. Now down to the critque, your picture does a wonderful job of asking questions and giving the viewers answers. The shading around the eye not only gave it dimension, but also brought a shadowy-make up feel to it. Is that the look you were going for? If so, it was an excellent technique! At first I found the concept of looking death in the eye a little clique, but as you look at the picture you lose the meaning of it and start feeling the emotions of it. Overall an excellent photo filled with passion and feeling. Marvelous.
